A Compendium of Hearts

It’s February, and that means that love is in the air. Just for you, I’ve collected some patterns to make hearts of yarn. The shape and the symbolism always make them a sweet way to share your talents. I hope you’ll choose one of these charming designs and use up some of your prettiest bits of yarn. All your friends will love you for it.

Still My favorite after all these years is Elizabeth Zimmermann’s short row heart. It’s clever, requires no waiting stitches stitches on a holder, and has beautifully curved edges. It can also serve as the back of a charming bonnet, or make it in bulky yarn for a cute hotpad or trivet. The pattern is found in her delightful book Knitting Workshop. If it’s not in your library, it deserves a look. It’s been recently republished and is a great book for a curious knitter.

If you are just a big softie, here is a little softie. It’s quick, cute and makes a lovely favor, ornament or gift enclosure. Here’s a hint: You can use your collected ends from other projects to use as stuffing!

If something whimsical and funky is more your style, I think this is delightful. The fur yarn would feel great and add a whole new dimension to your gift of love.

For something practical that will remind your loved ones of you all the time, this cute heart dishcloth is just the thing. It starts out like a basic bias-knit cloth, then adds the shaping in the second half.

For pure color-joy, these are irresistible. Aren’t they wonderful? If you’re not a crocheter, this might be the time to learn, or you can simply be inspired by the fun, bright color combos and create something similar with knitting.
